University of Sydney MBA Capstone research

Before you start

This is a research project conducted by MBA Capstone students at the University of Sydney.

This survey presents a proposed high-level change to the property insurance claims assessment process, including the option of an expedited settlement offer. It is illustrative only and is not intended to replicate an actual claims process in full.

The purpose of the survey is to understand how people respond to the proposal and to gather feedback on the experience. A short survey follows, and your responses will help refine the group’s findings.

While survey responses are retained, no data is recorded during the demonstration itself.

The exercise should take no more than six or seven minutes. Thank you for taking part.

Assigned scenario

Select from one of the following scenarios

Each participant should complete only one scenario. Respond as you genuinely would if this were your home and your money.

Building
$11,500

Storm ingress

Strong winds broke roof tiles. Rain entered two rooms and damaged sections of ceiling and wall lining before you could contain it.

Contents
$8,200

Burst pipe

A pipe burst while you were away for the weekend, damaging furniture, electronics and personal items in the living area.

Combined
$16,800

Storm — building and contents

A storm damaged the roof and caused water damage to both the building and several household contents items.

Your settlement offer

Most of your claim can be settled today

This is the amount available today, after your policy excess. One part of your claim needs a full assessment and is handled separately.

$0
Coverage confirmed. Your insurer has confirmed your policy responds to this event (). This offer is about how much, not whether you are covered.
Assessed loss$0
Policy excess — one per claim event (PDS section 7.1)$0
Available today if you accept everything$0
The Assured Settlement guarantee: you receive 100% of your assessed entitlement — no fees and no discounts for speed. You can accept the full amount now, or accept the parts you agree with and ask us to review the rest. Querying an item never reduces or delays any amount you have accepted, and your free internal review and your right to AFCA, the independent ombudsman, are unchanged.
Review your settlement

Accept what is right. Query what is not.

Decide on each part separately. Anything you accept is paid to your account today. Anything you query goes to a person — and it never holds up the rest. Your policy excess is deducted once from the overall settlement, not from each item.
